Didactic Potencial of the Project-Based Approach to Teaching Journalistic Style and Media Education at Secondary Schools

The main aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the possible benefits of the project-based approach to teaching journalistic style and media education at secondary schools on the basis of my own pedagogical practice. The first, theoretical part deals firstly with the role of media and mass media in modern society, with an emphasis on the current state of the media environment in the Czech Republic and the habits of pupils in secondary schools in consuming media content. This is followed by a definition of the concepts of media literacy and media education, a set of publicly available inspirational sources, curricular anchoring of the topic and the perspective of Waldorf pedagogy. A basic insight into the characteristics of journalistic style and project-based learning is also provided. The second part of the thesis is devoted to a description and reflection on the project of creating a class student magazine at the Waldorf Lyceum in Prague. First, the principles of teacher self- evaluation and the principles of the 3A methodology (annotation-analysis-alteration) are introduced, then the genesis and context of the described project, its progress and reflection are described. Diploma thesis "School media - press, radio, television, internet: on example of regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem" deals with school media production of pupils and students of primary and secondary education focusing on the Czech environment. The whole issue is framed within media literacy, media education. Moreover, the interpretation accents with its direction of production. The most important chapters of historical-theoretical part introduce the outline of the school media development from the beginning till nowadays. Practical part characterizes school media in the regions of Olomouc and Ústí nad Labem. The research survey is mainly focused on the occurrence of school media production, forms of their outputs and characteristics of individual types of school media. What is more, the survey is also interested in current trends in publishing of school and class magazines and their theme and genre profile. Survey summarizes reasons, which impedes realization of school media production. Finally, on account of compile findings and data, it deduces a school media typology, criteria of their possible categorisation and includes them into the media system. Impulses of Freinet's pedagogy useful for the czech education

This thesis is focused on Frenchman Celestin Freinet's pedagogy. The theoretical part first deals with the notion of alternative education and seeks to outline the features of the different types of schools in the Czech republic. In addition, a brief biography focuses on Celestin Freinet and describes the basic features and principles of his pedagogy. This part also examine teaching methods and techniques typical of the pedagogy and focuses in detail on one of them, the school magazine. The practical part documents a case study of one Swiss Freinet's school. It describes methods and techniques that are used there, especially the school magazine creation. The second part is dedicated to the practical experiment, which was carried out in the second class of one Czech school. Experiment focuses on a specific technique of free writing and the possibility of integrating this school magazine technique in teaching at the standart Czech school.

School media create specific territory of media landscape. However in certain circumstances, they can be considered as organisational media, which forms a part of civil media sector, or as alternative media. School media create from school peculiar type of public sphere too. School media production has quite long tradition in the Czech environment. First school media have a form of school or class magazines, which have appeared in the mid of 19th century. At the beginning, they were made from initiative of pupils and students. Their closeness to school has been changed and influenced by school experience and political situation through time. As a result, publishing of school magazines has been supported, tolerated, afflicted, and subordinated to supervision. Production media output as a part of incipient form of media education has not appeared until 80s of 20th century. The spectra of school media has extended after the November 1989. Firstly, the organisation of independent school radio and television broadcasts has started, besides school and class magazines and occasional student's broadcasts in school radio. The thesis focuses on school media that are created by students and teachers at schools. The project's introduction briefly defines basic terms and main types of school media. Specifics of the single school media and their content are shortly described. Following chapters are devoted to history and development of school media in the few past years at our territory. The theory part lists the most frequent topics chosen for school media along with factors of motivation that influence media creation. Part of the thesis deals with selected school documents, specifically 'Educational Framework Program' where stress is put on possibilities to use school media during the lessons of media education at elementary and secondary grammar schools. Second part of the thesis focuses on a specific case study where results from the research are presented. In the research it selfone type of school media, school TV of Secondary Grammar School in Pribram, is deeply analysed. The goal of the research is to investigate the course of preparation, planning and realization of the school reporting. At tempt of the thesis is also to describe what kind of students are becoming school reporters and why, last but not least what is the technical equipment of the school and what is the response of the school media audience.

The thesis is focused on the student journalism and its comparison with the content of national magazines intended for children and teenagers. The main aim of the thesis is to find out to what extent the topics in the school and national magazines are intertwined; what topics are most commonly found in national journals, and the extent to which students of (secondary) schools take on their journalistic work. The first (theoretical) part of the thesis is intended to characterize the principle and the main mission of the school magazines, ie what they serve and what their main benefits are for students or other readers. In this part, youth magazines are further specified in terms of the main target group of readers, content and relevant topics, language forms, etc. The theoretical part also explains basic concepts such as intelligence values and stereotypes in media presentation that will be used in analytical work. The aim of the practical part is to perform the brief characteristics of the studied sample of student and national magazines, including the criteria of their selection and especially the content analysis, exploring the most important and most frequented topics that the journals are exploring.
